Role Models

Name:

Susan

Title:

Technical Writer - I write the documentation manuals, online help, and web pages for software packages.

Path:

I used to be a programmer, but got bored with that. I got a lot of satisfaction out of writing, but didn't know what to write about. So, I taught myself how to use Word, saw an add in the paper for a technical writer, applied and got the job. The job was entry level and didn't pay much, but I got two years experience and then was able to apply for better paying jobs. Today I write documentation for C programmers, I like it very much, and I am well paid.

Comments:

A bachelors degree in English, Communications, or Technical Communications is good preparation. You should also consider taking a programming course in a popular language such as C, and you should join the STC (Society for Technical Communication). (Their URL: http://www.stc.org/)
