Role Models
Name:
Shannon
Title:
Director, Public Policy
analyze relevant policy for a national nonprofit
association, includes some lobbying, some research,
and many meetings
Path:
By accident. I have a degree in art history. I
moved to Washington DC without knowing anyone and
began temping. From that I made contacts (and
friends) which led to a job in policy
and that led to my current job.
Comments:
Learn as much as you can about how the government
works (even if you don't want a career in public
policy). Do not be intimidated by anyone in
government; they are there to serve you, not vice
versa. Read good newspapers; pay attention
to current events. Become an activist about an
issue or issues that concern you. Volunteer
for groups that interest you.
