Role Models

Name:

Nell

Title:

I'm a partner in a money management firm -- also a lawyer and author or co-author of four books, three about business and economics and one about movies!

Path:

Mostly by being open to the opportunities around me and making the most of what I was best at -- especially writing clearly, fast, and well. I always chose jobs by looking for the following: would I be working for the public good? Would I be learning a lot? Would I work with people I respect and enjoy? After I had children, I added as the most important question: Could I work 3 days a week? Interestingly, requiring that kind of flexibility opened up more opportunities (and more fun) for me than I could have imagined.

Comments:

Whether or not a particular profession seems to interest you at the moment, it is always worthwhile to talk to people about how they found what they do and what they get out of it. You don't have to know now what you want to do -- in fact, it's easier if you don't because you get the fun of trying all kinds of things.
