The Girl Next Door

It occurred to me after some number of visits to my apartment that the girl of 11 years, who lived nearby, was looking to me as a role model of some kind. I was certainly different from other women she knew, both because I had few material possessions in my small apartment and because I had a different sense of habits, priorities, and even decorum compared to other women in her young life. We adult women had a number of commonalities; we all wanted her to do well in her studies and to take an active curiosity about life. Alas, she has a strong preference to be lazy, and our words are so much blah, blah, blah to her. That said, I did notice that she paid detailed attention to me in matters that were of particular concern to her.

This is a little disconcerting as well as an intriguing opportunity. I treat her with respect, try to listen to her when I can, and offer guidance when I think she’s done wrong or when she might be open to it. Other than that, I’m not sure what else is appropriate.

Who are you a role model to?
